The study is currently taking place among 41 catchment areas (or “wards”) in Mwanza and Shinyanga regions of the Lake Zone (details on the rationale for including one additional catchment area in Mwanza are below). In this geographic region of Tanzania, 27% of AGYW have begun childbearing by age 19, 23% have unmet need for contraception, 39% of girls aged 15-19 have ever tested for HIV, and 2.1% of AGYW are HIV-positive.
There are 74 shops across 20 wards (10 intervention wards, 10 control wards) in Shinyanga and 72 shops across 21 wards (11 intervention wards, 10 control wards) in Mwanza.
Study participants will be selected from three populations:
- Aim 1: 41 health facility catchment areas will be recruited using the government list of health facilities; within each catchment area we will select 120-140 Accredited Drug Dispensing Outlets (ADDOs) whereby shop owners and staff who are aged 18 or older will be eligible to participate.
- Aim 2: 560-600 AGYW, aged 15-24 years, who are residing in one of the ~40 study areas will be recruited where we will begin our initial search for participants using AGYW “seeds,” via referrals from the Youth Advisory Boards, local schools, youth organizations (including for out-of-school AGYW), and participating ADDOs. The initial seed will invite others in such a way that thereafter the AGYW can continue referring other AGYWs who will be interested and eligible to participate in the study until we meet our recruitment target.
- Aim 3: 8-12 Referral facility staff who are female, aged 18 or older, and who are employed at one of the health clinics located in study areas to whom ADDO staff will make direct referrals for AGYW, and up to 30 ADDO owners and staff among participating ADDOs will be recruited.
To date (May 2023), we have only enrolled shop owners and staff as part of Aim 1.
